The Avalanche That Changed Everything

Out Of The Dark, Episode 3 of Season 2 of Alpine Worlds, opens in a steep couloir just after an avalanche. What begins as a descent quickly turns into a rescue. With injuries on the ground and worsening weather, the focus shifts to survival: regrouping, stabilizing, and waiting.

In hindsight, conditions had seemed manageable. But a weak layer, formed unnoticed during the approach, was missed. The slide shakes the brothers’ confidence and forces a deeper reckoning with risk, judgment, and trust.

To recover, the team travels to Norway’s Lyngen Alps. The goal is no longer to ride the hardest lines. It is to rebuild communication and regain clarity. Progress is slow. Cold starts, shifting weather, and uncertainty shape each decision. When a rare window opens, they climb in darkness toward the summit. Only when the terrain becomes clear and the snowpack feels stable do they commit to the descent.

About Alpine Worlds
Alpine Worlds documents authentic mountain expeditions rather than staged productions. Each episode begins with an ambitious concept and follows the actual process of execution: the setbacks, the adaptations, and the commitment required to see it through.

The series spans the Alps and beyond. Winter brings steep faces, hidden couloirs, extended approaches, and technical exposure. Summer opens up rivers, high ridges, long-distance flights, remote rock walls, and fleeting lines that exist only within narrow weather windows.

About the Weger Brothers
Jakob and Matthias Weger grew up in Schenna, South Tyrol, where rivers and mountains shaped their early development. While other families pursued conventional recreation, the brothers gravitated toward whitewater and developed proficiency in dynamic, unpredictable environments.

Their kayaking background led to elite-level competition. Matthias secured three European titles in extreme kayaking, while Jakob claimed the U23 World Championship in canoe slalom at Ivrea. After years competing on national teams, they recognized the constraints of a racing-focused career and redirected their efforts toward multidisciplinary alpine and river projects.

Today the Weger Brothers operate across steep skiing, snowboard freeriding, paragliding, climbing, biking, and technical kayaking. They have won the GoPro Million Dollar Challenge four times and cultivated an audience exceeding one million followers.

Jakob applies his slalom background to big mountain snowboarding, having earned a Freeride World Tour Wildcard and silver at the FWT Qualifier Ubaye 2025. Matthias channels his extreme kayaking intensity into alpine objectives and recently demonstrated his versatility at Ekstremsportveko in Norway with top finishes in paragliding precision landing and rafting head to head, along with being named an Honourable Citizen of Voss.
