Tupungato – Empathy in Death
A documentary to raise awareness on environmental damage in Chile.
Directed by mountaineer, activist, and filmmaker Rafael Pease, this documentary chronicles a winter expedition to Mount Tupungato while presenting a stark critique of how politics and corporations have devastated Chile’s ecosystem. The documentary premieres online on November 14, 2024.
Beginning with a quote from poet Nicanor Parra, “The mistake was in thinking the Earth belonged to us, when the truth is we belong to the Earth,” this film combines mountain adventure with a powerful call to environmental action. Featuring voices like environmental activist Marcela Mella and agronomist Jorge Pérez, the documentary uncovers issues like water privatization, destructive mining, and poor urban planning in Chile. Together, these experts reveal a network of governmental and corporate corruption, fueling Pease’s six-year mission to protect Chile’s natural wonders.
The Valley at Risk: A Call to Protect Tupungato
The Tupungato Valley in the Andes is under threat from extractive industries but could still be preserved. Pease, with his background in environmental science and activism, hopes the film brings nature closer to people and raises awareness for conservation. His aim is to create a national park encompassing 142,000 hectares—an area rich in biodiversity and a vital water source for 40% of Chile’s population.
Pease describes his documentary as “an adventure film that reveals the reality of mountain privatization in Chile, opening viewers’ eyes to the environmental struggles near home.” It’s a must-watch for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers who want to reconnect with the wild spaces that surround them.
