69º North
To travel 69 degrees North to the arctic was special. A surprise trip to celebrate a good friends 40th birthday and explore this beautiful northerly mountain range.
In a way, i’ve back storied the film to pay an ode to William Cecil Slingsby.
Slingsby was a mountaineer who hailed from Yorkshire, England. He first pioneered these mountains back in 1872 and is said to be the godfather of Norwegian mountaineering. This landscape must have been truly wild when he was stepping out, making countless first ascents of mountains in this iconic coastal range. A hardy man who lived truly for adventure.
By using guidebooks, local knowledge and mountain guides Beta (thanks Swaily), we managed to find an abundance of good snow and explore many different zones within the Lyngen peninsula. Saving the best to last.
Our crew were psyched and the casual starts allowed us to burn the candle at both ends. We waited for weather windows to good conditions and visibility to maximise the fun factor . The experience was tranquil and incredibly enjoyable compared to the high paced, elbows out dog fighting for turns often found on the slopes of Chamonix. Skinning up from sea level, it felt as if the arctic air was creamy and thick which propelled extra power in to the legs. Thick and creamy, like a point of Guinness.
There was something truly magical about standing on top of a mountain and looking over those vast arctic fjordlands. The mind couldn’t help but wander thinking if this is how Scottish winter looked once upon a time. Mind surf overload was a thing…. check this line here… holy f**K look at thing over there…..and on it went.
This was filmed entirely on the run. Typical of a Taylormade Film production.
