Skiing Whitehorn in Pakistan
Skiing Whitehorn in Pakistan follows a crew from Austria – skiers, an adventurous photographer, and the alpinist Stephan Keck – on a mission that is about more than just rocking the slopes. It’s about breaking boundaries, teaching children to ski, and experiencing the pure joy of the sport. Inspired by Samina Baig, the first Muslim woman to climb all Seven Summits, and her brother Mirza, who see sport as a means of change through their nonprofit organization, Pakistan Youth Outreach. Keck, impressed by their courage, brings skiing equipment and instructors to Pakistan to introduce this incredible sport to the next generation.
The film is more than a ski documentary. It’s a gripping experience about courage, culture, and the power of sport to effect change.
Descendance – November 17, 2023
November 17, 2023
Descendance“Descendance” featuring freeskier Dennis Ranalter, is a profoundly personal film that transcends the boundaries of traditional sports documentaries. Dennis, who had long identified himself primarily through his love for freeskiing, embarks on a journey of self-discovery and exploration of his identity as a Black Tyrolean. This introspective voyage is triggered by a call from his sponsor to submit ideas for the slogan “Never stop exploring,” leading Dennis to delve into his heritage and the other facets of his identity. The film project, realized with Legs of Steel, sees Dennis seeking support from individuals like Phil Young, who advocates for more diversity in outdoor sports, and Vanessa Spanbauer, an Afro-Austrian historian and journalist, providing insights into the experiences of Black people in Austria. This support was crucial for Dennis as he navigated unfamiliar territory, addressing his fears and doubts about the relevance and reception of his story. “Descendance” is not just about Dennis’s feats on the slopes but also his journey to Ghana, where he reconnects with his father and other family members for the first time in years. This trip symbolizes a journey of self-discovery, leading to a newfound acceptance and pride in his African heritage. Dennis’s reflections in the film, such as “Before, I was Austrian. Now I’m half Austrian, half Ghanian. That’s pretty cool,” and his realization of personal growth, add depth to the narrative. Now completed, the project brings him relief and confidence, as he embraces his role as a role model for many young people.
