Chasing the Spirit of Craig Kelly

What defines a legend? In snowboarding, that’s a tough one. With trick, terrain, and contest progress always on the radar, snowboarders aren’t known for thinking too much about the past. But where we are now owes so much to the key players of snowboarding’s early decades—and Craig Kelly had an outsized impact among the first generation of the sport’s pioneers.

During the winter of 2013, a small group of Craig’s friends, industry vets, current and past pro riders gathered at Baldface Lodge to ride and share stories about what he meant to them. TransWorld was lucky enough to get in on the conversation, and bring you this intimate look into why Craig defines “legend,” and why his influence on the sport should never be forgotten.

Craig died in an avalanche near Revelstoke, BC, Canada on January 20, 2003. RIP wherever you are Craig.
