Finding Waldron – a Backcountry Snowboarding Film on Montana’s Front Range

Many don’t see Montana like this, from the solitary snow pit atop the remote Front Range in Central Montana. No motorized vehicles, movie sets, or movie stars, just purple mountains and jagged peaks rising out of an ancient sea floor. As the guys winter camp among the trees and explore new lines on splitboards, they learn something from the unique experience, about their environment and their place in it.

Finding Waldron is a dive into the spirit of adventure. Why do men put themselves at risk for a few fleeting moments of bliss? What is there to gain from such experiences?

We spent 2 nights and 3 days, nestled among the trees just below the bowl. Just on the other side of the ridge was the boundary that separates National Forest from Wilderness, a strict film zone (for photography). The Bob is considered by many the “crown jewel” of the Wilderness system. It is composed of 1.5 million acres, established in 1964 and named after an early wilderness advocate and pioneer Bob Marshall.

Scott, our Camp Coordinator, kept the stove going, making sure to melt enough snow for the guys to drink and hydrate freeze dried meals (Peak). Thanks to Mountain Ops electrolytes for keeping us properly hydrated. And to Jet Boil for efficient water boiling with their Flash System.

AJ and Max are local boys who grew up riding at our local ski hill, Showdown. AJ now works there as their Operations and Ski Patrol Manager. As Max says, “Following AJ anywhere, is an adventure.”
