Travelling after the fresh snow was made especially easy for us last winter. The snow usually fell in front of our own doorstep – which meant that we spent most of the winter on our local mountains. The abundant fresh snow led to numerous “best days ever” and opened new lines, which can only be skied with a lot of snow. At the same time some impressive drops became harmless pillows. An especially warm February again led to avalanches which made some of our favourite lines unrideable.
For us these are located at the Arlberg, the Montafon, the Disentis or in Andermatt. Not exactly the most exotic ski resorts, all of these places are infamous for one or the other freeride piste, for their fresh powder and for classic “Zöpfeflechten”. So it helps if you use your local knowledge and occasionally unpack your skins to escape the big crowds.
